Wearing the number one jersey at Anfield has proved a
difficult task in recent seasons, but after a successful debut campaign with
Liverpool, 4 million pound signing Sander Westerveld wouldn't have regretted
joining the Reds from Vitesse Arnheim.
Aided by some classy performances from several of their key defenders,
Westerveld helped Liverpool become the stingiest defence in the Premiership,
conceding a misery 29 goals in 36 games.
Westerveld uses his size and agility to good effect between the sticks.The
Dutchman showed magnificent reactions when facing close-range shots, beating
away 68% of efforts struck from inside the area seven percentage points higher
than the Premiership average.
Although seemingly popular with
the Anfield crowd, Westerveld was offloaded by manager Gerard Houlier to Real
Sociedad after some high profile mistakes at the beginning of the 2001/02
season.
Westerveld was shocked by the decision, and felt hard done by. However, he
has moved on and wants to win things with his new club.
