Thomas Sorensen

THOMAS Sorensen broke the club record for the most clean sheets in a season in his first year in English football after replacing Lionel Perez between the sticks.

The Dane, who is in-line to replace Peter Schmeichel as Denmark's No.1 keeper, received offers from Ajax and Udinese as well as Sunderland but opted for a move to Wearside in the summer of 1998.

Sorensen is now a regular in the Denmark squad after winning more than 20 Under-21 caps and was part of his country's set-up in Euro 2000.

He cost Sunderland £500,000 from OB Odense and was voted young Player of the Year in his first season. He had a spell on loan to Danish second division side Svendborg FB in 1997.

Sorensen made his first start for Denmark in a friendly against Germany last year.
