Peter Schmeichel announced that he would leave Manchester United at the end of the 1998-1999 season.
He then Joined Sporting lisbon and helped them to win the league title.

CAREER NOTES:
1991:

Joins Manchester United from Brondby for 550,000 pounds.
1992:
Wins the European Championship with Denmark, saves a penalty from Marco Van Basten against Holland and is voted best player of the tournament.
1993:
Helps Manchester United win their first Championship in nearly 26 years. He keeps 17 clean sheets in 42 games and concedes only 31 goals.
1994:
Sent off against Charlton For Handling the ball outside the area and misses uniteds league cup defeat against Aston villa through suspension.
1995:
Goes over a year without conceding a goal at old Trafford.
Scores a late equaliser with a header in the UEFA cup against Rotor Volgograd after coming up for a corner.

1996:
The double is achieved with a 1-0 FA cup final win against Liverpool .
1997:
Feud with Arsenal's Ian Wright culminates in accusations of racism but Schmeichel is not charged.
1998:
Becomes first keeper to keep 100 Premiership clean sheets.
Announces he will leave Old Trafford at the end of the season.

1999:
Wins a third double as Manchester United beat Newcastle 2-0 in FA cup final.
Also wins emphatic treble and his first European Cup as Manchester United come from behind to beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the Nou Camp.
Moves to Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.

2000:
Buys his original club Hvidovre.
2000:
Denmark get knocked out of the European Championships with 3 defeats in 3 games.
Schmeichel insists he will stay with Denmark and help them qualify for the World cup in 2002.

2001:
Peter Schmeichel announces that he is quitting international football to concentrate on his club career with Sporting Lisbon.
"After nearly 14 fantastic and eventful years as a Danish international I have sadly taken the decision to end my international career," said Schmeichel.
2001:
Peter sensationally  joins Aston Villa on a free transfer, returning to the English game.
