Mark Schwarzer

Since signing for Middlesbrough, Mark Schwarzer has quickly established himself as one of the best ‘keepers currently plying their trade in the Premiership. The Australian shot-stopper has five international caps for the Socceroos, and joined Boro in a £1.5 million deal from Bradford City.

He joined the Bantams from German side Kaiserslautern in a £350,000 deal in November 1996, and played only 13 games for the West Yorkshire club before his big money move to The Riverside.

Such is his importance to Bryan Robson’s side that the club tied him down to the club by offering a seven-year contract, the biggest in the club’s history.

Schwarzer kept nine clean sheets for Boro during the 1999-2000 campaign, making 184 saves, the most by a ‘keeper in the Premiership. He also took 94% of crosses coming into the Boro box.

Born in Sydney, the 6’4’’ stopper has become a huge favourite at The Riverside and his demanding presence gives the Boro defence some much-needed stability.
