When Andy Goram left Rangers many felt that that this was just one player too many from the Nine in a Row team to be replaced. It didnt take Charbonnier though to suggest that the irreplaceable could be replaced but in an instant his season was finished when he suffered a knee injury against Bayer Leverkusen. Shortly before Christmas 1998 Stefan Klos was signed and immediately claimed the No 1 jersey.
His first few months in the goalies jersey were less than convincing with with many saying that he lacked the height and presence to be a top class keeper. However he came good when mattered in the cup final 1999 and his saves contributed greatly to rangers securing the treble. Even though Charbonnier had regained fitness for 99-00 Klos started the season as as No 1 and justified his selection with a number of fine performances including a memorable save in the home win over parma in the Champions League qualifier.
However it was in the parma game that klos suffered knee ligament damage which ruled him out for a short period and shortly after he returned he broke a bone in his hand after a training ground accident which ruled him out until January 2000. On his his return though he quickly regained his form and was a key figure in Rangers defending their SPL title with the pick of is perfomances being the 1-0 win at parkhead when at times he appeared to be all that stood between a Celtic win.
Klos was a German league winner and a Champions Cup winner with Borussia Dortmund and a keeper of the highest quality but it seems highly unlikely that he will be the German national keeper despite the fall from grace of that great footballing nation. Still if he's happy at Rangers.....
